TEXT 19
- sa ittham udvīkṣya tad-abja-nāla-

saḥhe (Brahmā) — he (Brahmā); itthamin this way — in this way; udvīkṣyacontemplating — contemplating; tatthat — that; abjalotus — lotus; nālastem — stem; nāḍībhiḥby the pipe — by the pipe; antaḥwithin the water-jalamwithin the water — within the water; āviveśaentered into — entered into; nanot — not; arvākin spite of going inside-gataḥin spite of going inside — in spite of going inside; tatthe stem of the lotus-kharathe stem of the lotus-nālathe stem of the lotus — the stem of the lotus; nālapipe — pipe; nābhimof the navel — of the navel; vicinvanthinking much of it — thinking much of it; tatthat — that; avindataunderstood — understood; ajaḥthe self-born — the self-born.
Lord Brahmā, thus contemplating, entered the water through the channel of the stem of the lotus. But in spite of entering the stem and going nearer to the navel of Viṣṇu, he could not trace out the root.
By dint of one's personal endeavor one may go nearer to the Lord, but without the Lord's mercy one cannot reach the ultimate point. Such understanding of the Lord is possible only by devotional service, as confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā (BG 18.55, Not yet available in the library.
